The particular form of capitalism that emerged in the 19th century from the earlier, mercantilist system. Industrial capitalism was the most mature form of capitalism at the time of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, but it has been superseded by capitalist-imperialism as a generalized mode of production (see imperialism).
